Why Clean Up Your Digital Footprint?

  • Your data fuels scams

Phishing remains the top attack method in data breaches. Leaked emails and login info can instantly put you in a scammer’s crosshairs.

  • Trackers never sleep

Even passive data — like your IP address, device ID, or browsing habits — can be harvested and sold, leaving you open to fraud.

  • Scammers are getting smarter

Scammers now use convincing cloned voices, and fake websites to trick even careful users. It’s harder than ever to tell what’s real and what’s a trap.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s in my digital footprint?

A digital footprint is a collection of the traceable data created when you spend time online.

Your footprint contains both information you actively post online (called your “active digital footprint”) and personal data collected by websites, apps, and data brokers (also known as your “passive digital footprint”).

Here are some examples of what this data look looks like:

  • Contact information. Full name, home address, phone numbers, email account, and social media account handles.
  • Browsing history. Online activity including the websites you’ve visited, search history, forum comments, online purchases, and more.
  • Personal details. Sensitive information including your credit card numbers, Social Security number (SSN), and more.
How can your digital footprint put you at risk?

While much of your digital footprint is tracked for ad targeting, oversharing can lead to:

  • Targeted scams. Hackers and scammers use leaked data — like your email, phone number, or login history — for phishing attacks or to hijack accounts.
  • Loss of privacy. Your personal info can be sold to telemarketers or added to mailing lists without consent, leading to spam.
  • Reputation damage. Trolls and bad actors can dig up old social media posts or photos to dox or misrepresent you online or in real life.
  • Hiring bias. Employers may review your online presence. A comment, photo, or outdated profile could influence whether you get the job.
  • Hacking and other cybersecurity concerns. Cybercriminals can use vulnerabilities found in your digital identity to access your online accounts.
Why do you need my email address?

We use your email to search for public data tied to your identity. It’s a required field to begin the search and helps link your personal records across data brokers and public sources. We may also ask for your name, city, state, and year of birth to improve the accuracy of results.

What do you do with my scan results?

Your scan results are displayed directly to you after we retrieve them. We don’t store this information on our servers or use it for any other purpose. The data stays visible only during your session.

How does Aura work?

Aura is an online safety company that helps protect your personal and financial information, devices, and online reputation. Aura combines tools like identity monitoring, credit alerts, and device security in one product.

  • Identity monitoring: Tracks your personal information (name, email, SSN, and more) across the Dark Web, data brokers, and public records.
  • Credit monitoring: Provides near real-time notifications of new activity in your credit file, like loans or accounts opened in your name.
  • Data Broker Opt-Out (DBOO): Paid users can trigger automatic opt-outs from 90+ sites that sell or share your data. Aura rescans these databases every day. The removal process may take up to 30 days, depending on the data broker's response time.
  • Antivirus and VPN: Available across an unlimited number of devices on both the Family and Kids plans.
  • Password manager: Stores and syncs your passwords across all devices. Aura alerts you to data breaches and updates weak or compromised passwords with one click.
  • $1 million identity theft insurance per adult: Covers eligible identity theft losses, including stolen funds or legal fees. Eligible Aura members can increase their coverage limits to include title theft, HSA and 401(k) cash recovery, and more.

Aura pulls all this into a single app so you can monitor and act quickly when something’s wrong.

Can Aura help remove my personal information from the internet?

Yes — but not during this free scan. Aura’s paid subscription includes a DBOO tool that automatically sends opt-out requests to over 90 data brokers that legally sell or share your information. This helps reduce your digital footprint over time. You can try Aura free for 14 days.
